Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common cause of sexually transmitted venous infections worldwide. It has both a high prevalence and an asymptomatic carrier rate, with frequent severe complications in women and newborns. Estimates indicate that 1 in 20 sexually active young women have chlamydia. The Newfoundland Chlamydia Test is a rapid test for the qualitative detection of Chlamydia antigen from female cervical smear, male urethral swab, or male urine specimens. Traditionally, chlamydial infection has been diagnosed by the detection of chlamydial inclusions in tissue culture cells. The culture method is the most sensitive and specific laboratory method, but it is labor intensive, expensive, lengthy (18-72 hours), and not routinely available in most situations.
