Malaria is a disease caused by parasites that is transmitted to humans through infected mosquito bites. Symptoms can be severe, such as high fever and chills, and the disease can be life-threatening, especially when caused by the Plasmodium species found in Africa.
Although malaria is not widespread in temperate regions, it remains common in tropical and subtropical areas. Each year, about 290 million people contract malaria and more than 400,000 people die from the disease.
The Newfoundland Malaria Test is a rapid test for the qualitative detection of P. falciparum-specific HRP-II, P. vivax (P.v.) and four species of circulating Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.), P. vivax (P.v.), P. ovale (P.o.) and P. malariae (P.m.).
