The menopause is the definitive cessation of menstruation, but is usually only scientifically diagnosed one year after the cessation of menstruation. The period before the menopause and the 12 months after are known as the perimenopause. During this time, many women suffer from symptoms such as hot flushes, irregular menstrual cycles, sleep disorders, vaginal dryness, hair loss, anxiety, mood swings, short-term memory loss and fatigue. The onset of the perimenopause is caused by changes in the hormone levels in the female body that regulate the menstrual cycle.
The Newfoundland Menopause Test uses a combination of antibodies, including anti-FSH monoclonal antibodies, to selectively detect elevated levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The procedure consists of two tests performed one week apart to confirm perimenopause independent of the menstrual cycle.
