Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland that is responsible for liquefying ejaculate and increasing sperm motility. An elevated PSA level can indicate malignant conditions such as prostate cancer as well as benign conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis. About 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Prostate cancer is more common in older men. About 6 in 10 cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older. The Newfoundland Prostate Test is a rapid and qualitative test used to determine the concentration of total PSA in whole blood. The test uses a special combination of antibodies that can specifically detect PSA.
